Training: Privacy Challenges in 2020 - Data Protection & FOI

“I felt the training was perfectly executed.”

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency

Now with the flexible option to be delivered in a virtual online classroom and soon to return, face to face training.

In May 2018, GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) became law across the EU, and as the Data Protection Act 2018 in the UK. The new legislation increased organisational transparency and accountability in the collection and processing of personal data, as well as the rights of those whose personal data is being collected and processed. The push for a “privacy by design” approach to personal data under GDPR strongly encourages the important recognition that how and why personal data is collected, processed and kept safe is an organisational issue.

Government activities are not wholly exempt from these new obligations, and together with responsibilities under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, it is important that staff working in Government understand the impact of these changes, their responsibilities and what they need to do next.

Key features:

  • What is Freedom of Information (FOI), what is Data Protection (DP)and what are your broad obligations?
  • Government transparency, open data and big data and how FOI and DP fit within the broader Government agenda
  • What were the changes to Data Protection as a result of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and how have they impacted on you?
  • How to handle FOI and Subject Access Requests (SARs)?
  • FOI and DP Exemptions and dealing with data breaches
  • What you need to do next and how you can tie actions into information governance and security

Designed for:

The Data Protection (GDPR), Freedom of Information and Information Management course is designed for all civil servants who are creating, managing, collecting and processing information and personal data.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understanding of FOI and DP and the impact of the GDPR changes
  • Be able to apply their responsibilities regarding FOI and DP to their organisations
  • Be able to discuss an action plan with achievable next steps
  • Have had an opportunity to ask questions about GDPR
  • Networked with other delegates from Government in a small intimate learning environment
