Chairing Meetings Training
Many directors become Chairs without understanding the requirements of the role, and the significant challenge involved in demonstrating leadership of the board, rather than leadership by the board. As the Financial Reporting Council’s Guidance on Board Effectiveness states, ‘Good boards are created by good chairmen. The chairman creates the conditions for overall board and individual director effectiveness'.
The course on chairing meetings by trainer Seamus Gillen will enhance participant’s’ knowledge, promote effective chairing skills, and develop their capability to create a performing team of directors who are aligned in helping the organisation achieve its purpose, and deliver its strategy.
New or experienced Chairs looking to improve their understanding of the role and their performance. All those in board roles needing to understand the role of the Chair, or seeking to become a chair. Company secretaries and other governance professionals responsible for board support as well as Management interacting occasionally with the Chair. Suitable for local authorities/council and can be adjusted to suit needs of participants.
Participants will develop both a theoretical, and practical, understanding of what is required to become a Chair performing at a high level, how they can approach the task with a stronger sense of purpose, and how they can gain confidence that they are adding value to delivering the strategic direction of the organisation.

Seamus Gillen, one of the lead trainers at Civil Service College, started his career in the local government, before moving to Whitehall as a civil servant, becoming Private Secretary to John Gummer MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, and then Private Secretary to John Prescott MP, Deputy Prime Minister.
Seamus Gillen started his career in local government, before moving to Whitehall as a civil servant, becoming Private Secretary to John Gummer MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, and then Private Secretary to John Prescott MP, Deputy Prime Minister.
He moved into industry, as the Group Company Secretary and Director of Regulation at Anglian Water (later AWG) plc, and then Head of Public Policy and Regulation at O2 plc (now part of the Telefonica Group).
He became Policy Director at the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), where he authored a number of influential publications, including ICSA’s guidance on 'Boardroom Behaviours', and the UK Financial Reporting Council's ‘Guidance on Boardroom Effectiveness’, He also created ICSA’s successful annual Awards dinner. He was responsible for the production of ICSA’s technical output, including its best practice Guidance Notes on boards and directors.
Seamus runs his own governance advisory business – Value Alpha Limited – working with boards and directors around the world. His particular focus is on board effectiveness and director effectiveness. He also runs a Leadership Development Programme for company secretaries.
Seamus Gillen writes and speaks extensively on governance issues. He holds a Degree in Business Studies, and is an MBA and an ICSA Fellow.
