NewCombatting Fraud, Corruption and Unethical Behaviour: Prevention, deterrence and detection

All organisations, whether in the public or private sector, large or small, everywhere face a similar challenge in maintaining the integrity of their systems and ethical standards of their people at all levels.  These challenges range from ‘quiet corruption’ which damages public trust and service delivery, through to ‘grand corruption’ which distorts a country’s entire economy. Wherever you work there is a need to develop effective tools to tackle these problems and protect against threats that come at any time, from anywhere around the world. Increasingly it is recognised that anti-corruption efforts need to cut across institutions and indeed nation states.

This one-week programme addresses the key activities involved in reducing the opportunities for unethical behaviour and discouraging those who would undermine an organisation’s ethical integrity. These include:

• Prevention through enhanced legislation and increased accountability
• Deterrence through the creation and adoption of robust systems
• Detection through effective monitoring, oversight and scrutiny

During the workshop participants will visit the Public Account Committee.  The Public Accounts Committee examines the value for money of Government projects, programmes and service delivery. Drawing on the work of the National Audit Office the Committee holds government officials to account for the economy, efficiency and effectiveness of public spending.

Workshop Objectives:

By the end of the workshop, participants will have improved their understanding of:

• Standards of professional conduct organisationally, nationally and globally

• Ways of establishing, embedding, communicating and upholding core values

• Areas of particular risk and ways of reducing exposure in those areas
• The particular challenges created by cybercrime and cyber-enabled crime
• The legal, regulatory and professional infrastructure necessary to reduce opportunities for misconduct
• Systems for dealing with conflicts of interest
• How to create the environment within which transparency and accountability can more readily be improved
• Mechanisms for detecting corruption and unethical behaviour
• Options for cross-institution working

During the workshop you will be able to:

• Discuss a range of policy, procedural and practical approaches to addressing the risks of inappropriate behaviour
• Experience approaches to oversight and external scrutiny
• Develop a wide range of techniques for improving the ethical health of an organisation
• Understand approaches to reducing the risks of unethical behaviour
• Explain the current and emerging threats from cyber-criminality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence
• Use what you have learnt to analyse and improve the effectiveness of systems and policies in your own organisation
