NewMarket Engagement and Commercial Readiness

This course gives non-commercial leaders and practitioners the confidence to manage early supplier interaction with greater care, control and commercial awareness before formal procurement begins. Early signals shape the whole commercial relationship. Supplier approaches, informal contact, market briefings and early conversations can influence expectations, create bias and affect fairness long before any formal process has started. Participants will explore how early market engagement can either strengthen commercial insight or create avoidable risk. The course helps participants distinguish between useful market engagement and uncontrolled supplier influence, while recognising when commercial colleagues need to be involved.
The course also focuses on internal readiness before external engagement. Participants will consider why supplier conversations should not be used to compensate for unclear needs, weak ownership, uncertain outcomes or poor internal alignment. Participants will use Sequora’s DRIVE methodology to reflect on real supplier-facing situations, identify risks and define practical actions. EQ awareness is used to strengthen tone, curiosity, professional boundaries and judgement. Responsible AI-assisted practice is introduced as a way to test supplier-facing language, identify potential bias and improve consistency A recurring theme throughout the day is the value question: where is this adding value? Participants will use this lens to consider how their actions influence requirements, supplier engagement, commissioning, delivery, performance and risk.
Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how early engagement shapes commercial outcomes before procurement formally begins. They will be better able to recognise the risks linked to informal supplier interaction, manage supplier approaches with greater confidence and avoid bias, over-commitment or unclear signals.
They will also understand how their own behaviour, language and judgement influence supplier perception and commercial control and they will identify practical actions to strengthen fairness, transparency, supplier confidence and readiness for formal procurement.
