NewFoundations of Commercial Partnership

This course gives non-commercial leaders and practitioners the confidence to create clarity before commercial activity begins, strengthening the foundations for better procurement, supplier engagement, contract delivery and public value.
Strong commercial relationships start with clarity, not assumption. Commercial value is shaped long before a contract is signed, through early decisions about need, outcomes, ownership, roles, responsibilities and governance. Participants will explore how confusion, unclear ownership, late commercial involvement and untested assumptions can create avoidable delay, rework, tension and risk. The course supports stronger alignment between non-commercial teams and commercial or procurement colleagues from the outset.
Participants will use Sequora’s DRIVE methodology to reflect on real situations, test assumptions and identify practical actions. EQ awareness is used to strengthen communication, empathy, trust and judgement. Responsible AI-assisted practice is introduced as a way to structure early thinking, test the clarity of requests and identify missing information. A recurring theme throughout the day is the value question: where is this adding value? Participants will use this lens to consider how their actions influence requirements, supplier engagement, commissioning, delivery, performance and risk.
Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of what needs to be in place before commercial activity progresses, including the need being addressed, the outcome being sought, who owns the requirement, where commercial input is needed and what governance or decision-making is required.
They will be better able to recognise ambiguity, assumption and misalignment before these become procurement or delivery problems and identify actions to strengthen role clarity, early alignment and commercial confidence.
