NewLife After the Bench: Making a Success of Retirement for Judges and Judicial Officers

The end of a working life is too often regarded as a termination of something rather than a transition to what can be a fulfilling, valuable and rewarding next stage. This is particularly true for those serving as judges, whose working life has been defined by and constrained by their role, potentially for
decades.

Judges, in short, face even more challenges than most other senior public servants. If their transition to what will hopefully be many years of ‘postbench’ life is to be successful and potential opportunities are to be maximised, this requires planning and preparation. This programme offers the opportunity to do just such preparation through discussion, expert advice and case studies.

Aim:

  • To provide attendees with the opportunity to reflect on their lasting impact on their judiciary and community and on the forthcoming transition from working to retired life.
  • To help prepare attendees to manage the financial, physical and professional challenges and opportunities which retirement can offer.
  • To suggest tools which can enable a more fulfilled later life.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the programme participants will be able to:

  • Identify more fully where they are now and where they want to be in the future
  • Consider how they might create and sustain a legacy
  • Plan how to manage health challenges and changes
  • Budget for retirement and maximise their personal financial planning
  • Decide if they would wish to coach and mentor the next generation
  • Describe techniques to establish new boundaries and create opportunities
  • Make technologies work for them in the next phase
