In conversation with Paul Wylie: Learning from failure

Human beings learn from their mistakes – how we learn to walk, how we learn to ride a bike. All require trying, failing, iterating and improving over time. BUT admitting failure in the public sector is very difficult.

Paul believes that if we genuinely want to encourage innovation, autonomy and engagement, then we need to talk about it and that starts with leaders admitting they are fallible.

During this conversation we will:

  • Discover how to respond to failure
  • Provide guidance on how to use failure positively to create an innovative and engaged sector
  • Discuss practical actions that can be applied immediately

Our Wellbeing & Resilience Associate Director, Kat Thorne, will be in conversation with Paul Wylie, Government of Jersey on Wednesday 22nd March at 10.30 am.

Join us for this important and engaging conversation about how to respond to failure and use it positively to create an innovative and engaged sector.

Name: Paul Wylie
Role: Strategic Director of Policy Department: Government of Jersey

Since 2021, Paul Wylie has been the Strategic Director of Policy at the Government of Jersey, which is a self-governing Crown Dependency. Prior to this he was the Director of Strategy at the Mayor of London’s Office for Policing and Crime, responsible for relationships with the Metropolitan Police, policy on policing and criminal justice matters.

Paul was a civil servant in the Home Office between 2004 and 2017, undertaking a range of roles including: working as Private Secretary to three different Home Secretaries, a Parliamentary Bill Manager, Secretary to an Independent Review of Police Pay, and finally in operational delivery as the Director of Immigration Enforcement for London and the South of England. Responsible for almost 1,000 officers across 10 sites, he was an arrest-trained Immigration Officer and led reforms to increase the number of voluntary departures from the UK and improve community engagement.

Listen to our previous episode of 'In Conversation With' where we interviewed Nathan White, who co-authored a guide on new applicants trying to navigate the civil servant's job market and application process.
